One of the first things to keep in mind is to NEVER use a personal profile as a business page. For example, I have a Facebook personal “timeline” page under my name as David W. Shelton. From there, I promote all of my activities, up to and including Imagine Media Solutions and Business & Heritage Clarksville. There, you’ll learn all sorts of nifty things about me, my life, my social circles, my relationship, and you might figure out a thing or two about my politics. It’s not for everyone — it’s for me. I do a ton of networking through that page, but it’s all easily identifiable as David W. Shelton.

According to Facebook’s terms of service, I can not create a personal page — sometimes referred to as a “friend” page — for a business. Despite their rules, this practice is very, very common. I received a phone call from a client the other day whose profile was deleted a few months ago for this very reason.

How do you know if you’re at risk? Simple. If your business page has “friends” instead of “likes,” you’re in violation of their policy. My simple, free advice is this: Change your profile to a business page immediately:

…Maintaining a profile (timeline) for anything other than an individual person is a violation of Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities. If you don’t convert your profile (timeline) to a Page, you risk permanently losing access to the profile (timeline) and all of your content.

The down side is that you’ll probably have to add new content. The up side is that you’re not limited to 5,000 friends. Your business “like” fan base can go into the millions. Not only that, your entire friends list and profile photo will transfer over, saving you the hassle of building a new list of fans. To get started, just go to their migration page.

It’s a simple rule: When it comes to Facebook for business, don’t get personal.

The code itself is simple. The “apple-touch-icon” code lets the browser know that this image is specifically designed for a home screen icon (in this case, the nifty Imagine logo), and the link itself is the exact location of the image on your server.

For the iOS user, it’s even easier to place the icon on their home screen (after all, it IS an Apple  iOS device). When they’re on a website they like (namely yours), they’ll just tap the “action” button (see the figure below), tap “Add to Home Screen,” and type out the desired name for your icon. It’s that easy!
